Mbappe’s Two-Year Real Madrid Record: Only Harry Kane Has Bettered It

Two years on from the day he finally walked through the door at Valdebebas, the Mbappe Real Madrid record has reached a number almost nobody in European football can touch. Since his first appearance for Los Blancos in August 2024, only one player in Europe’s big five leagues has outscored Kylian Mbappe — and that man plays in Bavaria.

The peg is Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, when Mbappe marked his first Bernabeu outing of the season with a hat-trick on Jose Mourinho’s return to the stadium. It was his sixth treble in a Real Madrid shirt and the 25th of his career, according to Madrid Universal, and his message afterwards was simple enough: Madrid must carry on like this.

Only Harry Kane has bettered the Mbappe Real Madrid record

The raw figures are startling. Madrid Universal, crunching the numbers across Europe’s top five leagues in all competitions since Mbappe’s Madrid debut, put the Frenchman on 89 goals and 11 assists — 100 goal involvements in two seasons at a club where he had to learn a new league, a new city and a new role at the same time.

Only Harry Kane sits above him. The Bayern Munich striker has 102 goals and 121 goal contributions over the same period, which makes him the sole outlier in a list where everyone else is chasing. Mbappe, meanwhile, has taken the Pichichi in each of his first two seasons in Spain, and after two rounds of this campaign he is already out in front again — Marca joked that the race for it has lost its suspense before the end of August.

The version of Mbappe the Bernabeu wanted back

What matters more to the madridismo than the arithmetic is how he looked. Last season faded out on him, interrupted by injury, and the pre-season did not offer many clues either. Against a stubborn Real Sociedad side, he opened the scoring with the game stuck, restored the lead after the break and then finished it off inside the last ten minutes with a left-footed goal that had the Bernabeu on its feet.

Mourinho, who does not habitually single players out, made an exception. “I don’t like to talk about individuals, but what Kylian did today…” he told the post-match press conference, having earlier described the night as “even more beautiful, more spectacular — and winning, well, fantastic”. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Portuguese went further, calling what Mbappe had done “crazy” — while pointing out, as ever, that the team had been a team throughout.

He had help. Jude Bellingham supplied two assists, Federico Valverde teed up the opener, and Vinicius Junior got his first goal since signing his new deal. The full story of the 4-1 is one of a front line starting to click rather than a one-man show.

The number that still matters most

And that is where the caveat lives. For all the goals, Mbappe’s Madrid years have not yet delivered the trophy this club measures itself by: Real Madrid were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League in each of the last two editions, by Arsenal and then Bayern Munich. Emilio Butragueno, the club’s Director of Institutional Relations, made the target explicit after Thursday’s draw in Monaco, saying the objective is a top-eight finish in the league phase to avoid the extra knockout round.

Which is why the tone around Mbappe this August feels different. Madrid are top of the table with six points and six goals from two games, but Mourinho has already flagged the defensive lapses he wants ironed out, and there are bodies missing everywhere. Mundo Deportivo counted seven absentees in Thursday’s session at Valdebebas — Aurelien Tchouameni, Raul Asencio, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Endrick and Thiago Pitarch — before Sunday’s trip to face Malaga at 17:00 CEST.

A squad that thin needs its best player carrying it, and right now he is. Two years in, the Mbappe Real Madrid record says he has been almost the most productive footballer on the continent. The next two seasons will decide what it was actually worth.
