Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night, turning José Mourinho’s first home match of his second spell in charge into a rout. Mbappé struck on 40 minutes, again just after the hour and once more on 79, with Vinícius Júnior adding the other. Luka Sucic’s 44th-minute leveller was the visitors’ only reply.
Real Sociedad Punish A Sluggish Bernabéu Start
It did not begin like a rout. Los Blancos were careless in possession and jeered by their own crowd before the interval, and, as the Guardian reported, Mikel Oyarzabal was denied by Thibaut Courtois inside 10 minutes before Sergio Gómez volleyed narrowly wide on 34. Mbappé’s opener — Fede Valverde splitting the defence, the Frenchman cutting inside and lashing the ball into the top corner — settled nothing. Four minutes later Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Álvaro Carreras were all caught out by a long ball and Sucic drilled the equaliser past Courtois.
Marc Cucurella came on at half-time and Madrid were a different side after it. Jude Bellingham supplied two assists, per Bernabéu Digital’s live coverage, Vinícius made it 3-1 on 68 minutes, and Mbappé completed the treble on 79 with a lofted finish after the Brazilian sent him clear.
“I’m pleased with the feeling the players had at the end, with winning well at home, with the smiles,” Mourinho told reporters afterwards. “And tomorrow we train, because Málaga come on Sunday.”
It is two wins from two for a side that, as Managing Madrid noted, is now 10 LaLiga matches unbeaten. Mourinho, whose homecoming this site previewed on Tuesday, remains unbeaten in 11 games in the Bernabéu dugout across both spells. Málaga visit on Sunday.
