Bernardo Silva: The Real Madrid Pivot Mourinho Did Not Plan

An injury empties a chair, and nobody ever quite knows who will be sitting in it when the owner comes back.

Aurelien Tchouameni was supposed to be the man holding the middle of Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid together this season. Instead, Bernardo Silva has become the pairing that starts games — and after two wins from two, an emergency solution is starting to look like a plan.

As Mundo Deportivo put it on Friday evening, the Uruguayan and the Portuguese have quietly become a common-law couple in the double pivot. Six points from six, and the most valuable thing a stopgap can buy: time.

Why the Bernardo Silva pivot exists at all

Tchouameni has not played a competitive minute this season. He came back from the World Cup carrying muscular problems and, as Marca reported on Friday, he was still training away from the group at Valdebebas on an individual programme designed to get him back to full physical condition without inviting a relapse. He is expected to miss Sunday’s 5pm meeting with newly promoted Malaga at the Bernabeu, alongside Endrick, who is managing muscular tendinitis.

Mourinho had already set the tone before Real Sociedad. The club, he said, would not gamble: if it takes another week, it takes another week, and nobody is going to push him.

So the coach improvised. In his 4-2-3-1 he pushed Jude Bellingham closer to the box, and behind him he picked Bernardo Silva and captain Federico Valverde against both Espanyol and Real Sociedad. Madrid won 2-1 in Cornella with a goal in stoppage time, then beat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Mourinho’s first league night back at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho knows exactly what it costs him

What makes the arrangement interesting is that the manager has been openly honest about the trade-off. Bernardo, he explained after the Espanyol game, gives the team organisation. But playing alongside him flattens Valverde’s best quality.

“Today we started with Bernardo and Valverde behind,” Mourinho said, in comments carried by Mundo Deportivo.

“We lose a little of Valverde’s attacking projection. He hit the post. Valverde, if he plays with Tchouameni or Camavinga, can reach that position more often. We are all getting to know each other, and it is better that we get to know each other without dropping points.”

That last line is the whole philosophy of Madrid’s opening fortnight. Learn on the job, but bank the points while you do it.

Two games, two very different verdicts

The performances have not been identical. Against Espanyol, Valverde was the man who lost Alex Calatrava for the equaliser. Against Real Sociedad, both were better: Bernardo registered four tackles and three interceptions and kept the ball moving through a difficult first half, while Valverde produced the moment that broke the game open, a surging run from deep before the pass that set up Kylian Mbappe for the opener.

The Spanish press is not unanimous, though. Mundo Deportivo’s player ratings called Valverde a line-breaker and marked Bernardo down as anonymous, arguing again that central midfield is not where he belongs. Eduardo Camavinga’s introduction to give the middle some air rather made the point.

Marca see it differently where the captain is concerned. Mourinho, they write, has settled on Valverde as a central-corridor footballer, a long way from the years when he was shuttled across all three positions on the right, and the staff value his engine as the balancing weight in a side that fields close to four attackers. That is consistent with what the coach said in his press conference this month, when he declared flatly that Valverde is a central midfielder.

What happens when the chair’s owner returns

Madrid are top of the table with a treatment room that still holds Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao, Raul Asencio and Thiago Pitarch, as our Malaga team news set out. Tchouameni’s comeback is a question for September, not this weekend.

When it arrives, Mourinho will have a genuine decision rather than an obligation — and on the evidence of two wins, the man most likely to keep his seat is the captain.
