Rodri Transfer: Why Real Madrid Were Never Fully Convinced

For most of the summer, the Rodri transfer was the one piece of business that looked like it would define Real Madrid’s season. A World Cup-winning holding midfielder who, per MARCA, had long dreamed of playing at the Santiago Bernabéu; a squad with an obvious gap in front of its centre-backs. Then Barcelona moved in front, Rodri told Los Blancos he had chosen somewhere else, and the file was closed.

Now the detail is emerging, and it is less a story of Madrid being outbid than of Madrid never quite committing. With the LaLiga opener at Espanyol days away, that matters. Bernardo Silva and Federico Valverde are reported to be José Mourinho’s double pivot for the first league game, with Aurélien Tchouaméni said to be short of pre-season minutes — a midfield assembled without the player Madrid spent the summer being linked with.

Inside the Rodri transfer: the calls Madrid did make

According to MARCA, as relayed by Madrid Universal, Florentino Pérez and José Ángel Sánchez made direct contact with Rodri during the summer. The interest was real. The conviction, reportedly, was not. The same report describes internal doubts over whether the 30-year-old was the right profile at all, with a belief that he holds the ball too long for the football Mourinho’s teams play.

That is a striking thing to read about a player Bernabéu Digital rate as the outstanding performer of this summer’s World Cup. Per MARCA, the approach Rodri eventually received did not match the one he had imagined. Madrid were interested without being fully persuaded, and a player weighing two elite offers could feel it.

The Rodri transfer call Mourinho never made

The most telling line concerns the manager. Mourinho, the report states, never personally contacted Rodri — and that stands out because he has done exactly that elsewhere. He spoke directly to Yan Diomande and Carlos Espí to explain where they fitted in his project, and MARCA say he called Marc Cucurella himself before the left-back’s move from Chelsea. On arrival, Diomande said you cannot say no to Real Madrid. Rodri never had that conversation.

Transfers of this size are rarely settled on salary alone. Barcelona, by the accounts coming out of Spain, improved their personal terms and made Rodri feel wanted. Madrid weighed a sporting question and answered it honestly, if quietly. Both are defensible positions. Only one of them ends with the player signing.

What the Rodri transfer costs Barcelona

Bernabéu Digital report that Manchester City have accepted Barcelona’s offer, citing Fabrizio Romano on the agreement and David Ornstein of The Athletic on the terms: €60m fixed plus €16m in variables, of which €11m is described as easily achievable. City therefore expect at least €71m. No club has announced anything, so it remains a reported deal until it is signed. Earlier this month Rodri was reported ready to run down his Manchester City contract to force a return to Spain, a stance that briefly reopened Madrid’s path to him.

Madrid, meanwhile, have a deep-lying playmaker role to fill from within, and Bernardo Silva’s free transfer from City looks far more central to the plan than it did in June. Whether that holds up over a 38-game season is the question the Rodri transfer leaves behind. If Mourinho’s midfield does the job, the club’s doubts will look like judgement. If it does not, a summer in which Real Madrid talked themselves out of a World Cup winner will be re-read very differently at the Bernabéu.
