Eduardo Camavinga has spent much of his Real Madrid career being asked to be two players at once. Under José Mourinho, that is over. According to Defensa Central, in a report carried by Madrid Universal, the coach has ruled out using Camavinga at left-back and sees him strictly as a midfielder for the season ahead.
The 23-year-old has repeatedly been shifted out to the left whenever injuries or a thin squad demanded it. The report says Mourinho does not want him losing time adapting to another role, and would only turn to him there in an extreme emergency. Instead he is planned as an alternative to Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde in central midfield.
For Madridistas this is one of those quiet decisions that shapes a season. The emergency left-back solution has been part of Madrid’s furniture for years, and it always came at the same cost: whoever filled in was doing a job he had not trained for, in the one area of the pitch where a mistake is punished immediately. Removing that option says as much about how Mourinho intends to use his squad as any team-sheet will.
Why the Camavinga left-back experiment is finished
Two things sit behind the decision, per the same report. The first is developmental: Mourinho believes that constantly learning the demands of different positions distracts Camavinga from becoming the midfielder he should be. The second is simpler — Madrid finally have cover there. Marc Cucurella’s arrival has strengthened a position that caused problems in previous seasons, and the competition on the left no longer needs a midfielder patching it up.
What his role looks like instead
Madrid Universal’s report describes Mourinho as considering his squad complete and working with the players he already has. Camavinga is expected to feature as rotation and cover in the middle, often from the bench, sharing minutes with Tchouaméni and Valverde rather than being asked to fill gaps elsewhere. For a player whose Madrid years have been defined by versatility, that is a narrower brief — and, the report suggests, a deliberately clearer one.
The exit door is not fully shut
There is a caveat, and it comes from a different desk. Bernabéu Digital, citing Marca, report that Real Madrid have not ruled out selling either Camavinga or Tchouaméni if a Premier League club comes back in before the window closes. Neither player was willing to leave this summer and both are under contract, which is why the club’s midfield business stalled in mid-August. The same outlet adds that Tchouaméni may have been offered improved terms after turning down interest from Manchester United, though nothing has been made official, and that Mourinho’s own preference is for Camavinga to move on.
Those two readings do not sit comfortably together, and both are worth treating as reports rather than settled fact. What they agree on is the practical picture: with the window open until 31 August, no deal is close, and Camavinga is training as a Madrid midfielder.
Which is where it lands for now. When Los Blancos line up at Espanyol on Saturday, if Camavinga is on the pitch, he will be in midfield — not filling in at left-back. After years of being moved around the map, that alone counts as news.
