Bernardo Silva Presented by Real Madrid: ‘Playing for a Club Like This Isn’t for Everyone’

Thirty-three days after Real Madrid confirmed the signing, Bernardo Silva finally got his moment in white. On Wednesday morning the Portuguese midfielder was welcomed at Valdebebas by Florentino Pérez, signed his contract, held up the shirt, and said the thing every Madridista wanted to hear. “Since I was a kid, when you don’t know whether you’re going to become a footballer, your dream is to play for Real Madrid,” he said. “I’m very happy to be here.”

It was, by design, a quiet occasion. As Madrid Universal report, the club’s presentations this season are being staged behind closed doors, with only the president, honorary president José Martínez ‘Pirri’ and the new signing’s family in attendance, and the ceremony carried on Real Madrid TV. José Mourinho inaugurated the format on Tuesday. Bernardo, who arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, was accompanied by his wife and daughter.

What Bernardo Silva said at his Real Madrid presentation

Speaking to Real Madrid TV afterwards, in remarks carried by Managing Madrid and by Madrid Universal via AS, the 32-year-old reached for the detail that tends to land hardest with visitors to this club.

“I’ve already played here several times. Seeing the 15 Champions Leagues is always impressive, but seeing them here as a player is even more special. Playing for a club like this isn’t for everyone.”

He would know. Bernardo spent the best part of a decade at City facing Madrid in Europe’s biggest knockout ties — he has stood in that trophy room as an opponent. On Wednesday he saw it from the other side. “When you’re in this room, you realise how big Madrid is,” he added. “I already knew it, but here you feel it in person.”

His closing message was aimed squarely at the stands. “I’m very happy to be here and soon I’ll play at the Bernabéu and meet the fans. Now it’s time to work and keep winning trophies, which is what this club is accustomed to.” After a 2025-26 season that ended without a single one, that last line carries a little more weight than the usual presentation-day boilerplate.

The ceremony: contract to 2028, and the number 20

The formalities were traditional even if the setting was not. Pérez received him in the boardroom at the Ciudad Real Madrid, the pair watched a video reviewing his career, and Bernardo signed a deal running to 30 June 2028 — two seasons. He was then handed the customary replica of the Santiago Bernabéu, a watch and a shirt bearing his name and, per Madrid Universal and Bernabéu Digital, the number 20.

Where he fits under Mourinho

None of this is ceremonial in football terms. Madrid Universal report that Mourinho intends to use his compatriot in a deeper midfield role alongside one of Federico Valverde or Aurélien Tchouaméni — the job that was supposed to belong to a specialist controller before the Rodri pursuit collapsed and the Spaniard joined Barcelona. The same report notes he remains an option on the right and at number 10.

That is a considerable amount of responsibility to hand a 32-year-old who arrived for nothing, and it is worth being clear that the tactical detail is reporting rather than a club announcement. What is not in doubt is that Bernardo has already featured in pre-season and has spent several weeks working with his new team-mates — he is not being eased in.

Which brings the story neatly back to where it began on Wednesday morning: a player who has spent years admiring this club from the opposite dugout, now being asked to solve one of its most awkward problems. He starts properly at Espanyol on Saturday, with the Bernabéu introduction he spoke about still to come. As he put it himself: playing for a club like this isn’t for everyone.
