When Bernardo Silva arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu on a free transfer this summer, the assumption was that Real Madrid had landed a creator — a versatile forward to add guile out wide or in the final third. A few weeks into José Mourinho’s pre-season, the plan for the Portuguese may look very different indeed.
According to journalist Ramón Álvarez, as reported by Madrid Universal, Real Madrid are considering deploying Bernardo Silva as a deep-lying midfielder — the very role Rodri would have filled had the Spain international not chosen Barcelona. It is a striking twist that says as much about the club’s window as it does about the player.
A surprising role for Bernardo Silva
The report suggests Bernardo Silva is expected to feature in a double pivot next season, most likely alongside Federico Valverde or Aurélien Tchouaméni. For a player who built his reputation as an attacking midfielder and winger, dropping into the base of midfield would be a genuine reinvention. Silva can drift and dictate tempo, but he is not a natural ball-winner, and asking him to sit in front of the defence would test both his legs and Mourinho’s tactical balance. At 31, he also arrives with the reading of the game and positional intelligence that can make such a switch work, and Mourinho clearly rates his football brain enough to hand him the keys to the engine room.
How the Rodri snub reshaped the plan
The idea has taken shape only because Real Madrid’s midfield plans were upended. After Rodri opted for Barcelona, the club decided against chasing another defensive midfielder, with reports insisting Mourinho is satisfied with what he already has. Marca, cited by Bernabéu Digital, reports the squad is now considered 95% complete, with only an astronomical late offer likely to change anything.
That leaves a logjam elsewhere. Following Yan Diomande’s club-record arrival, the wide areas are crowded with Rodrygo and Brahim Díaz, while the attacking-midfield berth is already contested by Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler. The one clear gap in the squad sits in the deeper role — the position Los Blancos never reinforced — and Bernardo Silva is the versatile piece Mourinho may try to fit there.
The risk in Mourinho’s plan
It is, on paper, a gamble. A pivot built around a converted attacker could leave Real Madrid short of protection in transition, and much would depend on the partner beside him doing the defensive legwork. Camavinga and Tchouaméni offer more orthodox cover in that area, so the plan may hinge on the balance of the pair Mourinho picks around Silva. Yet Mourinho has never been shy of pragmatic solutions, and if Silva’s intelligence and reading of the game translate to a deeper role, the coach may feel he has found a way to paper over the Rodri disappointment from within.
For now it remains a plan rather than a certainty, and pre-season will offer the first real clues. But if the reports are accurate, one of the summer’s most intriguing sub-plots will be watching whether Bernardo Silva can become the anchor of a midfield he was never signed to hold together.
