Arda Guler Pushes Bellingham for Mourinho’s No.10 Role

Four days before Real Madrid kick off LaLiga, the most interesting question at Valdebebas is not who plays up front. It is who plays behind the striker — and Arda Guler has spent six weeks making that a genuine argument.

According to Mundo Deportivo, relayed by Madrid Universal, José Mourinho views both Guler and Jude Bellingham as options for the attacking midfield role behind Kylian Mbappé, and the Turkish international has moved ahead in the race to start away at Espanyol on Saturday. For most of the summer that shirt looked like Bellingham’s to lose.

Why it matters: this is the first real selection call of Mourinho’s second spell, and it pits an established England international against a 21-year-old who has just had the best pre-season of anyone at the club. Whichever way it goes, it sets a tone.

How Arda Guler changed the picture

The significant part is not that Guler played well. It is where he played. Mundo Deportivo report that Mourinho first tried him in a deeper central role and got far more convincing results once the 21-year-old was pushed forward, given the freedom to receive between the lines, dictate tempo and create around Mbappé.

The outlet names him among Real Madrid’s standout performers of pre-season. Diario AS, also via Madrid Universal, add the numbers behind that: Guler started every pre-season fixture and registered two assists in the attacking midfield role. We saw the ceiling in Budapest, when his masterclass guided Madrid past Ferencváros.

Timing helped. Bellingham returned late from the World Cup, and rather than simply keeping the seat warm, Guler used the extra weeks to build rhythm. That is the difference between covering for an absent star and displacing one.

Bellingham, and the reason this is not settled

Here is where the Madrid press disagree with itself, which is usually the sign of a real decision rather than a manufactured one. The same AS reporting that credits Guler’s pre-season also lists Bellingham among four outfield untouchables in Mourinho’s thinking, alongside Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Yan Diomande, with Thibaut Courtois the undisputed goalkeeper. In AS’s version, Bellingham is still first choice at No. 10.

AS’s read on Mourinho’s likely XI keeps the same shape: a 4-2-3-1 with Diomande right, Vinícius left, Bellingham behind Mbappé, and the genuine uncertainty sitting in central defence, at right-back and in the double pivot. Two respected outlets, two different answers, one weekend to find out.

None of it dents Bellingham’s standing. One pre-season does not undo what he has been for this team, and his next contract is already the club’s next big piece of business. But a manager who has just been handed a genuine alternative tends to use it, and Mourinho has never been sentimental about reputations.

Saturday is the answer

Real Madrid open the season away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday 22 August, kicking off at 21:30 Spanish time — 20:30 in the UK — with the game shown in Spain on Orange TV and DAZN, per Bernabéu Digital.

Mourinho has spent pre-season saying very little and settling rather a lot: the front line looks decided, the double pivot is taking shape, and Mbappé has come back in the condition the club wanted. The one line on the team sheet still worth arguing about is the one Arda Guler has spent all summer trying to claim. We will know at 20:30 on Saturday.
