Bernardo Silva Debuts as Mourinho Tests Him in Deeper Role
Bernardo Silva has made his Real Madrid debut, playing 45 minutes in the 2-1 pre-season win over Ferencváros in Budapest — and José Mourinho wasted no time in offering a first clue about how he sees the summer signing. The Portugal international was introduced at half-time and immediately deployed in a deeper midfield role than the one he made his name in.
Bernardo Silva handed a pivot audition
Mourinho sent Bernardo on in place of Eduardo Camavinga at the start of the second half and paired him with Federico Valverde in a double pivot, asking the Portuguese to help build play from a position closer to the centre-backs. As Bernabeu Digital reported, it is a role several outlets expect him to take on now that Rodri will not be joining — a gap the club has chosen to fill from within after opting against a new holding midfielder.
It is familiar territory in one sense: Bernardo often dropped alongside a holding midfielder at Manchester City, frequently next to Rodri himself. Predominantly an inside forward, playmaker or winger across his career, he showed the versatility that makes him one of his generation’s most complete midfielders, constantly offering himself for the ball in the 2-1 win over Ferencváros settled by the club’s academy graduates.
“Bernardo is a magical player, and very funny and entertaining. He’s fit in very well with the whole team,” said Federico Valverde after the match.
With the new campaign nearing, Mourinho now has a fresh option in the engine room to weigh up over the remaining friendlies. On this early evidence, Bernardo Silva’s Bernabéu story may begin from deeper than many expected.
